We spent five nights in a funky little studio apartment WITH A GARAGE!! In the center of Old Town Alexandria – on S. Payne Street.

With this cute little ice-cream place right across the street. They serve custard – my favorite. Did I have any? NO! I foolishly didn’t go on the one day they were open!

Old Town has grown since we were last there, but thankfully the newly built houses are architecturally similar to the old, and so they all blend harmoniously.
We went to the Sunday morning service at the National Cathedral.

The cherry blossom trees in Washington were in full bloom and at their peak! What a sight! Unfortunately they also brought out throngs of people and the temperatures were in low to mid 80’s the first few days we were there!

We (and Ffly) enjoyed the waterfront parks in Alexandria on the Potomac.

We visited the Mall area and the VietNam memorial wall.

I especially wanted to visit a special exhibit of works at the National Gallery by Elizabeth Catlett. She produced a varied and large body of work across a period of 60 plus years. Inspired by her experiences as an African American woman, mother, and her life in Mexico where she moved in 1946. She portrayed both personal and political images in her paintings, Lino cuts, and sculptures.
“ I am inspired by Black
people and Mexican
people, my two peoples.”

“I have been, and am currently, and always hope to be a Black Revolutionary Artist, and all that it implies!”

A friend and I also visited the extremely well curated Museum of African American History. Such heartbreaking history shown through images and stories.
