Downeast Maine

We skipped town for three nights for a change of scenery and to decompress after finalizing the move and sale of the house. Robbinston, Maine was our destination – in a little cottage on the bay.

Ffly, especially, loved the grassy area and beach which were perfect for ball games – the oversized bean bag wasn’t too bad either! We thought the moose in the living room was quite something!

The Shackford Head trail near Eastport was a good little hike.

We also loved the hike to see the reversing falls – a strange phenomenon that we experienced just after high tide as it was starting to retreat.

Traditionally called “Cobscook Falls,” the reversing falls are an unusual phenomenon of boiling tidewaters on the Maine coast. The word Cobscook is derived from the Passamaquoddy word, Kapskuk, meaning “boiling water.” Although the water is cold throughout the year, the churning tides often provide a visual illusion that they are boiling. Between the Reversing Falls Preserve and Falls Island, a huge underwater ledge combined with significant tidal flow creates the falls. The dramatic tides in the bay rise and fall up to 24 feet every 6.2 hours.

Amazing views along the trail.

Such a good little hiker! And poser!
