Unbeknown to us we crossed the Arctic Circle at 6:30AM on July 2nd. It wasn’t particularly momentous as the weather was as beautiful as before, and I sat on the balcony with my coffee in about 73 degree temps!
Our first port was Hammerfest, which claims to be the northernmost city in Europe, but has been replaced by Honnigsvag due to a reduced change in population required to be considered a city. I guess there is still much debate over it!
We had a nice 2km walk alongside the harbor from the cruise port to the town center.
The Polar Bear Society “… founded in 1963 in Hammerfest. The idea was to create a unique memory for guests of the World´s Northernmost Town. The polar bear is our city’s coat of arms and was therefore chosen as the society’s logo. The strength of the polar bear reflects the willpower and survival skills necessary for living in the Arctic.”
The church, visible from our balcony (above) was built by architect Hans Magnus, and consecrated in 1961. The triangle symbolizes the Holy Trinity and also a reference to the traditional fish drying racks, used in this area to dry cod and other fish.
The mosaic image behind the altar is composed of Norwegian stones and completed in 1972. The ceiling’s wood paneling is reminiscent of an upturned boat.
What’s one to do when the sun shines all night long?
Just one, WOW!
