The second largest town in Iceland (population of around 18,000) and nicknamed the “Capital of North Iceland”. The area where Akureyri is located was first settled in the 9th century, and has always been predominantly a fishing center.
We had originally planned to rent a car and visit the Myvatn area with waterfalls and mineral baths, but decided instead to hang out in Akureyri and visit the botanical garden.
Some of the different architecture in town.
The botanical garden contained many plants, shrubs and trees that we are familiar with in Maine. One big surprise was to see peonies just now at the end of their blooming season!
Knitting is a real thing here in Iceland! To include making covers for the rubbish bins!
Just another tourist hanging out in Akureyri!
