Amsterdam’s canals and houses

Riding the ferry to Central Station

We walked the cobblestoned narrow streets along canals to the area called de 9 Straatjes (9 streets).

Amsterdam’s rich history can still be seen in its canal houses. The narrow design was due to thrift and savings on taxes which were determined in part by the width of the property. The interiors have death defying steep and narrow staircases to match.
Note that there is a difference in the windows of canal houses? Some windows consist of one large pane and others are gridded. Evidently people used to pay taxes on the windows based on the squares visible! The more squares = more prestige!

The hoist at the top is for bringing in large items that won’t fit up the stairs. It’s believed that this is also why Dutch windows are so large.  It’s also believed that the forward tilt of some of the buildings is intentional to avoid structural damage during the process of lifting heavy furniture.

We ended the day with a canal boat ride which gives a completely different perspective of the houses and the many boat houses.
