Ohrid. North Macedonia

Ohrid lies on Macedonian side of the beautiful crystal clear Lake Ohrid. It has a definite laid back and vacation feel with a lovely wide promenade alongside the lake, a quaint old town, a fort stacked on the side of the hill, and plenty of outdoor seating and dining opportunities. We had delicious Ohrid trout for dinner, washed down by a local wine. Our Hotel, Unique Resort & Spa, was within walking distance of town along the lovely waterfront promenade.

Ohrid has been continuously inhabited for 4000 years and is especially know. For its 365 churches!

We took an evening boat ride on the lake.

A sweet little secret that we learned about here in Ohrid – Ohrid Pearls!

The story goes that in 1924 a Russian soldier staying in Ohrid knew of a secret recipe from his home near a lake with a similar fish in Russia. The Talev family and the Filevi family are keepers of this secret.

Evidently the scales of the Plasica fish are part of the secret recipe. The fish is endemic in Lake Ohrid. An emulsion paste is made from the fish scales and is used to cover the surface of the Ohrid Pearl in layers, creating a lustrous and elegant pearl.
