Stobi – ruins and wine

Situated in a fertile valley, the ancient city of Stobi was part of a vital trade route – The Via Egnatia – a road constructed by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. It crossed Illyricum, Macedonia, and Thracia, running through territory that is now part of modern Albania, North Macedonia, Greece, and European Turkey as a continuation of the Via Appia.. Stobi was at the crossroads of civilization with a rich legacy of palace ruins, bright mosaics, and religious relics. Only 20% of the site has been unearthed to date

Constructed in first half of 2BCE – used for gladiatorial fights and performances. Capacity was 7,600

The Stobi winery produces very fine wines and is a medium producer. Each of the oak barrels holds 225 liters of wine and barrels are only used twice for aging.

We enjoyed a wine tasting and delicious lunch.
