Woudrichem is strategically located where the Maas and Waal rivers meet. In the 9th century, a marketplace arose on an embankment and today this spot is still the heart of the fortified town.

It received city rights in 1356 and the town flourished as a fishing center. The Martinus Church and city walls date back to this time.
The old walled town is in immaculate condition with beautifully restored houses and a gate which also served as a prison.
It was fun to see where Agnita was born and spent her childhood. We met up with her longtime friend at her beautiful home and garden and where she has a ceramics studio.

In 1358, a knight called Dirc Loef van Horne had his castle built at the confluence of the rivers. The fortress sits in a landscape of water, moat, and ramparts accessible by a small ferry. Loevestein castle has played many roles over the centuries: defence, prison, and national heritage site.

Love learning about this. Chris, that is a wonderful photo of you in the doorway.
