At the whim of the newly crowned King Carlos III of Spain, who wanted some exotic plants, flowers and trees from his territories in South and Central America brought over to adorn his palace in Madrid, in 1788 an “acclimitisation garden” was established for the plants part of the way in the Canary Islands.
Ranking with the likes Kew Gardens in London, officially named as Jardín de Aclimatación de la Orotava, or “JAO”, this beautiful 20,000 square meter garden is in Puerto de LaCruz.
