Today we went to the lovely market town of Bridport in western Dorset. The downtown area is mostly unchanged except, for some new storefronts and variety of restaurants, but I was delighted to see some green grocers, hardware shops, butchers and other old time specialty shops.
We bought a couple of pasties and IPAs and headed toward the coast, just a couple of miles away.
Our picnic spot overlooked the long coastline that as children we camped on at Burton Bradstock. I have memories of us hauling spratts and even some mackerel with buckets only ankle deep in the sea. By the way – the pasties were amazing! Traditional and steak and Stilton!
We continued east to Abbotsbury and Chesil Beach. I have long had a fascination with Chesil Beach, a shingle bank behind which is a lagoon. My interest started after reading Faulkner’s “Moonfleet”, which was fictional, but smuggling actually took place along this part of the Dorset coast. Some stories are told here . The church in fleet is some distance from the shore ….. but …. Let your imagination go!
