The visit to the shipyard was very important to me – having followed the struggles and bravery of the workers, led by Lech Walesa as they took on the communist government back in the 1970’s and 80’s.
The magnificent monument to the fallen workers in December 1970 stands outside the gates to the shipyard where shipyard workers staged their 18-day strike in 1980. Also there is the hulking European Solidarity Center which is built from steel to resemble a ship. Inside the story is told through multi media displays of how these Polish shipbuilders risked their lives for freedom.
