We had two easy and uneventful days of driving from home to Staunton, VA where we stopped at a lovely campsite (Walnut Hills). Ffly was happy to be able to run free and roll on grass.
Then lo and behold our Spring-like weather turned back to being very Wintery!
Rather than risk any mishap or being stuck on I81 in these conditions, we holed up for another night.
We took advantage and visited the lovely old downtown of Staunton and enjoyed a good local brew and sandwiches at the Depot Grill. The railroad arrived in Staunton in 1854 transforming the rural village into a thriving commercial center. At the turn of the century a huge train derailment demolished the original train station and a new one was built in 1902 and was in use until the 1960’s when it was abandoned. Today the area surrounding the station, and the station itself is once again a hub of activity.
The impressive bar in the Depot Grill has a story of its own. It was once a fixture in the luxury Ten Eyck Hotel in Albany, NY. By the mid-50’s the hotel became part of the Sheraton chain and was demolished. The 40+foot long bar was saved and transported to Staunton for inclusion in the restoration of the train station. It is truly magnificent.
We left winter behind in Virginia and arrived for Spring in Charlotte NC where we visited friends.
We truly arrived in the south when we landed at Santee State Park, SC. with hanging spanish moss, palms and magnolias!
Ffly has been a real trooper with the long days on the road, but her reward will be coming to her soon.
Your photographs are stunning Chris, and so crisp and detailed. I have to admit one of my favorites in Ffly looking into the camera from behind you. Never a more intense dog have I seen. Thanks for keeping us all posted as the “where in the world the Uricks are.” Love and light to you all.
