Plovdiv is considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe and one of the oldest in the world.
With its cultural and historical heritage dating back 8000 years, It is located at the foot of seven syenite hills and is considered one of the best Bulgarian cities to live in. Older than Rome and Athens and a contemporary of Troy and Mycenae. The first settlement appeared in the sixth millennium BC on the northern hilltop /known as Nebet Tepe / of the Three hills. Plovdiv emerged as a real town in the 12th c. BC.
If you think about a European city that’s filled with history, but at the same time cozy with its narrow cobblestone streets; and chic with the longest pedestrian shopping street in Europe – lots of outdoor cafes, wine bars and art galleries, you might be thinking of Paris or Prague! But no! Another “P” city offers the same and more!
Bulgaria is a leader in the production of essential oils – in particular rose oil – for which its exports are responsible for three quarters of the world’s total supply.
The Amphitheatre of Philipopolis (one of the former names of Plovdiv) that dates to the 1st century is one of the best preserved Roman theaters. The theatre is still in use for concerts today.
Downtown the Roman Stadium is mostly under the city streets, with just small viewing area. It is 250 meters long with racetrack 150 meters. Built in the second century under reign Hadrian, the hippodrome could hold 30,000 spectators.
