We left the winter landscape behind before it turns into the yucky “mud season”. It’s been a beautiful and real winter in Maine this year, with good snow cover and temperatures cold enough that it hasn’t rained and ruined the snow. Ffly and I were able to get out for walks virtually every day.
However, enough is enough and it was time for us to head south on our annual quest for green grass and long, empty beaches!
Our first stop was in Fort Washington, MD where we spent a couple of days with our grandson, Dustin, and his wife – both of whom are in the Air Force and stationed at Andrews AFB.
We enjoyed a couple of meals at the National Harbor area, which is close to their home. I loved this bison sculpture made entirely of scrap metal.

The ferris wheel on the Potomac is reminiscent of the Eye in London, but not as big.
Our home away from home for a month is located in Kure Beach (just south of Wilmington, on the Atlantic). The house is a 5-minute walk to the beautiful beach.
The Kure Beach pier, built in 1923, is said to be the oldest pier on the U.S. Atlantic coast.
The River Walk along the Cape Fear River in historic Wilmington makes for a pleasant walk with many waterfront restaurants and old warehouses converted for other use.
So where are the greener pastures? All I can see is beiger sand!
