Along the way – I40/Route 66

Windmills -acres and acres of them generating power!

Since living in Kansas in the early 80’s I’ve had a fondness for grain silos! I was happy to see them in the landscape of the Texas panhandle.

Is this the American West’s stone henge? On Route 66 west of Amarillo, Texas, Cadillac Ranch was invented and built in 1974 by a group of San Franciscan art hippies known as The Ant Farm.

Amarillo billionaire Stanley Marsh 3 wanted a piece of public art and The Ant Farm came up “with a tribute to the evolution of the Cadillac tail fin”. Ten Cadillacs “were driven into one of Stanley Marsh 3’s fields, then half-buried, nose-down, in the dirt (supposedly at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza). They faced west in a line, from the 1949 Club Sedan to the 1963 Sedan de Ville, their tail fins held high for all to see on the empty Texas panhandle.”

Oklahoma didn’t inspire any photos, but was pleasant and easy enough of a drive. We spent the night at Tinker AFB and had a very nice end site with lovely grass for Ffly to play ball.

Into Arkansas and it’s as though we’ve definitely sprung into Spring. The trees are fully leafed out and everything is a lush green. We’re spending the night at Toad Suck – no, that is not a typo! – on the Arkansas River. Here is a theory on how the name originated.

We will continue on I40 tomorrow departing from the old Route 66 and continue through Memphis TN to Jackson and the Natchez Trace SP.
