Heading East … slowly

We spent a night in Flagstaff, on the property of relatives, and could walk across the acreage to another petroglyph site.

En route to Albuquerque and a quick stop to pick up some provisions we parked next to this adorable calf ensconced in an edible wagon!

We were supposed to dry camp on a ridge overlooking the Petrified Forest but aborted after driving down washboard dirt roads to discover the “site” was on a slope covered in desert brush! We stopped instead at USARVPARK on Rte 66 in Gallup.

We found some grass for Ffly to catch frisbee and then sauntered around the historic district. This is about as “wild west” as it gets!  The town borders native american territory and most of the store fronts displayed beautiful pottery and beadwork; I saw interesting drums and other native american artifacts in a large pawn shop which was closed. Unfortunately the town is quite run down, despite efforts with brightly painted trash receptacles and sidewalks. Gallup is interesting in that the train track runs adjacent to the downtown area parallel to the old Rte 66 and I40 is just a little to the north also dividing the old town from the newer strip mall area.
