Senj to Opatija to Pula

Travelling northwards towards the Italian and Slovenian borders the Italian influence is even more obvious in the architecture – especially the villas along the coast.

We spent one night in Senj and another in Icici (just outside Opatija)

We made a stop in Pula with the highlight being the Arena of Pula, which was once the site of gladiator fights. It was built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the magnificent Colosseum in Rome.

The ground plan is elliptical, measuring 100 meters and 130 meters, and is built of local limestone. It is believed that the Amphitheater could seat about 20,000 spectators.

Today, it is the venue for many different events ranging from film to sporting or concerts and opera. It seats 5,000.
