Penobscot Bay at its best!

Penobscot Bay, named for the Penobscot River which flows to the bay, is about 40 miles long and 30 miles wide. Belfast, as well as other quintessential Maine towns and villages tuck into its shoreline. Some 200 islands ranging from larger inhabited to small mounds of granite with fir trees sprouting from them dot the waters.

As we set off from Belfast harbor our friends’ boat, Mortal Stakes, slowly skimmed the glassy water. Seals popped up in the harbor and loons bobbed happily.

It was a perfect day to explore a small part of the bay as we passed Islesboro and rounded Cape Rosier.

Charming Bucks Harbor was our destination with its intimate and sheltered harbor. We tied up at the family-run dock and store where we purchased lobsters. Al cooked them on a gas ring provided and we sat at the picnic table on the deck looking out at the most idyllic scene. The way life should be!
