Agrigento

Leaving Ragusa.

The drive from Ragusa to Agrigento took us past miles and miles of farm land, vineyards, citrus groves, olive trees and green houses.

Agrigento is a hilltop city on Sicily’s southwest shore. It’s known for the ruins of the Ancient Greek city of Akragas and the Valley of the Temples, a vast archaeological site with well-preserved Greek temples.

Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the leading cities in the Mediterranean world. It is set amongst fields and orchards of almond and olive trees.

In the past the columns were covered with white alabaster or marble and the timber roofs were ornately painted.

The temples are set in a lovely garden with lots of cacti, almond trees and other trees.

Agrigentian goats have a wonderful life feeding on the lush grass and other plants.
