Chefchaouen – the blue city

This city has been on my list of places to visit for many years – finally the reality! It feels like one is walking in the sky above the clouds!

Known as “the blue pearl”, Chefchaouen’s buildings and alley ways are painted in the most beautiful shades of blue. This place is a photographer’s dream!

Why blue? There are various theories. Some say that the Jewish immigrants, who came here via Ceuta to flea the Nazis, started the tradition. Others say the tradition goes back to the 15th century and the city’s founding as a fortress to ward off Portuguese invaders. Others say that blue repels mosquitoes – I am not kidding! At any rate – it is spectacular and has put this small, out of the way city on the tourist trail.
