Cuernavaca and Atlixco

We left Mexico City as it was preparing for the massive demonstrations. Driving south through the Tepizteco mountains and farmlands to Cuernavaca – the lush capital of Mexico’s Morelos state.

Evidently Cuernavaca is a destination for holistic activities and is very popular because of its temperate climate.

The Cuernavaca Cathedral, in a 1500s walled monastery complex is one of the early 16th century monasteries built initially for evangelization efforts of indigenous people after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire.

Atlixco was a pleasant surprise – we stopped to stretch our legs and strolled through the little town which is known for its Christmas ornamentation.
