Lubec, Maine

Lubec started as a small fishing village in 1755 and was incorporated in 1811. It hasn’t grown much (pop. 1,300 +/-). The town is located on a peninsula overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay and water is visible from most points.  It is also the gateway to Campobello Island (Canada) which we’ve visited often. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic we can’t cross the border, but could virtually walk across at low tide.

In the mid 1800’s Lubec was home to a tannery, three gristmills and nine sawmills; by 1886, there were also two shipyards, three boatbuilders and three sailmakers – the 19th century was probably Lubec’s most prosperous.

The waterfront remains active with large fishing and lobster vessels. – and swimming Border Collies!

Ffly and I took a walk out on the old stone jetty – Campobello is just a stone’s throw across the water.
