RVcationing in Maine

Several weeks ago we spent a couple of nights at Great Pond, near Amherst, Maine (a military recreation area affiliated with Portsmouth Naval Station). It’s a beautiful spot with a lovely campsite that also includes yurts (for rent) and lakeside cabins with their own private docks (next time!)

We had the opportunity to take a boat ride at dusk, but unfortunately no moose sightings even though there are a couple resident on the pond.

We just spent a week exploring western Maine while staying at Mount Blue state park campground at Webb’s beach –  a little slice of heaven with spacious and beautifully maintained sites, a swimming beach, boat launch (Ffly’s swimming spot), and a lovely hiking trail (Swett Brook trail) through a forest with soaring pines, moss, mushrooms and sweet, cool air.

We went on a backroad (dirt roads) trip and visited Small Falls – a beautiful spot.

….and hiked/climbed the “easy to moderate” trail  to Angel Falls. For our mountain goat dog it was no problem, but some of the river crossings and climbing over huge boulders was  beyond “moderate”. It was beautiful and enjoyable, but despite good rain this summer the falls were meagre.

We discovered beautiful sand beaches and a pristine lake – Ellis Lake at Roxbury Pond.

.. and an  interesting waterfront two-room structure at Mooselookmeguntic Lake. The beach was strewn with wonderful driftwood.

Oquossoc is a lovely spot where the Rangeley River enters Rangeley Lake – a perfect spot for lunch. There was a microbrewery there, but unfortunately closed until later in the day!

Our other camp site at Coos Canyon was unique in that we had our own little private access to the Swift River (once again, not so swift, but a lovely spot).

This is one of our “around the world in Maine” trips.
