Our first ever experience of exiting a port or airport and having a difficult time engaging and paying for a taxi! After several attempts, we arranged with a driver to take us to the sights around Salalah for a three-hour ride – shared with Brian and Brenda. The fees in general were pretty steep ($70) but divided between the four of us were reasonable, especially given that the drive to town was a good 20 minutes.
Close to the border with Yemen and surrounded by mountains that meet the sea, Salalah must be a somewhat isolated town. We visited the large mosque, local souk, gold souk, and went to a pretty little cove with beautiful warm, turquoise waters.
Many buildings appear to be newly constructed, and during the monsoon season of July to September, the brown landscape of Salalah and its surroundings is completely transformed to a beautiful and lush green, and locals and tourists alike flock to Salalah.
I don’t think $70 for three hours is that expensive. We would pay just over $100 to do about 60 K’s here in 45 to 60 minutes. What a fantastic trip you are doing. Guess you will be back home for Xmas. Cheers Lolita
