Big Bend National Park

We are staying just three miles from the entry to the park at RoadRunner RV Park in Study Butte (pronounced Stoody Byute). Thankful that we have hook-ups as it was in the 90’s today and expected again tomorrow!

Over 800,000 acres of high desert landscape with mountains reaching 8,000 feet (Chisos) and the Rio Grande flowing between Texas and Mexico. The beautiful canyons and magnificent views of wide open plains with a backdrop of shadowy, purple mountains are breathtaking. This is a wild and barren landscape – also beyond the park – and one wonders what inspires people to want to live in an area that is arid, hot, dusty. The night skies are magnificent because there is no ambient light whatsoever.

We packed in quite a  bit for a day: drove through the Chihuahuan Desert with a stop at Dug Out Well.

On to the eastern most point of Boquillas Canyon and the Rio Grande.

could this be an illegal immigrant?

Then through the Chisos Basin to Santa Elena Canyon. No need for human made walls here at the border!

Back to Study Butte along a four-wheel drive navigable washboard dirt road for 13 miles, which felt like 31! Ffly wasn’t too impressed with the jolting around.
