Texas East to West

First stop: Beaumont, or outside Beaumont on a campsite surrounded by meadows. We woke to a misty morning for our walk.

Onward to San Antonio and Fort Sam Houston RV Camp. A nice spot with space for Ffly to play ball and frisbee. The base itself is huge and we particularly enjoyed the serenity of the veterans’ cemetery with 157,000 headstones. I have always loved the orderliness of military cemeteries.

Next stop Amistad National Recreational area on the River Pecos near Del Rio. A beautiful reservoir with turquoise water and sandstone banks. Like in Tennessee, the water levels were down a good 30 feet.

Ffly enjoyed a swim at the marina boat ramp and we enjoyed sitting in the shade waiting for this glorious sunset.

From there we continued on 90 west (we started it in San Antonio) through what I call the “empty quarter”. Empty of civilization; empty road; empty pasture land; empty and derelict buildings. No cell service and no gas or services for 88 miles until we reached Sanderson and Uncle’s convenience shop and gas pumps! We’ve driven this route before and find it quite fascinating and especially love the different ranch gates with trails leading off into the distance with no ranch or house in sight.

  1. Brings back memories. We stayed at Travellers World RV park in San Antonio. Had problems starting up when we were to leave. Cheap bus into town. Good Mexican restaurants nearby.
