Hill Country, Texas – back roads

I am a master at finding traffic-free, winding back roads and we rode them yesterday to Fredericksburg via Reimer’s Ranch State Park. Texas blue bonnets were in bloom on the sides of the roads, long horn cattle grazing in pastures; we crossed creeks where the water rises to above 5 feet during flood times, saw lovely stone homes and huge ranches.

The walking/hiking trails in Reimer’s Ranch were beautiful with views of the Pedernales River.

We saw blue bonnets, cacti, Texas persimmon, and other shrubs and plants

Our uber-smart border collie did something not so smart as soon as we let her off leash! she ran to the first prickly pear cactus and tried to bite into it!! I honestly think she thought it looked like a natural frisbee!!! anyway, pulled two thorns from her nose and she was off and running with no harm done!

The scenery is beautiful as leaves are sprouting, creeks are running and the landscape Is endless.

We met up with friends Philip and Elizabeth for dinner at The Salt Lick in Driftwood – a huge place that is a barbecue institution in these parts.

Today we took a ride up to Muleshoe Bend and the Colorado River. The blue bonnets were not in flower yet nor as abundant as in the past. The park ranger told us that in October 2018 the entire park was under 30 feet of water during a massive flood.

After playing ball down in a huge open area near the water we enjoyed another hike through some meadows and wooded areas of the park.

We ended up in Luckenbach, Texas …. having by-passed Fredericksburg because of the heat and the crowds!!!

Luckenbach Texas (Remastered)
The only two things in life that make it worth livin’
Is guitars that tune good and firm feelin’ women
I don’t need my name in the marquee lights
I got my song and I got you with me tonight
Maybe it’s time we got back to the basics of love
Let’s go to Luckenbach, Texas
With Waylon and Willie and the boys
This successful life we’re livin’
Got us feuding like the Hatfields and McCoys
Between Hank Williams’ pain songs and
Newberry’s train songs and Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas ain’t nobody feelin’ no pain
So baby, let’s sell your diamond ring
Buy some boots and faded jeans and go away
This coat and tie is choking me
In your high society you cry all day
We’ve been so busy keepin’ up with the Jones
Four car garage and we’re still building on

Maybe it’s time we got back to the basics of love
Let’s go to Luckenbach, Texas
With Waylon and Willie and the boys
This successful life we’re livin’ got us feudin’
Like the Hatfield and McCoys
Between Hank Williams’ pain songs and
Newberry’s train songs and Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas ain’t nobody feelin’ no pain
Let’s go to Luckenbach, Texas
Willie and Waylon and the boys
This successful life we’re livin’s got us feudin’
Like the Hatfield and McCoys
Between Hank Williams’ pain songs
And Jerry Jeff’s train songs and Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas there ain’t nobody feelin’ no pain
